They have reached the streets, they are on the sidewalk, and despite the fact that they are not permitted on the Austin city lane, wheelless electric scooters have found homes there too.
But next month, the pilot program will allow scooters and electric bicycles to run on several tracks managed by Parks and the Recreation Department.
The program will begin in December and run for around nine months until the fall of 2019.
"The strategic direction of the City of Austin includes the purpose of mobility to get us where we want to go, when we want to get there, safely and cost-effectively. Electric bicycles and scooters are alternative modes of transportation which, if used properly, can serve to support the goal, "Kimberly McNeeley, director of Parks and Recreation, said in a memo to city leaders on Monday.
According to the memo, electric bicycles and scooters will be permitted in the following lines:
Northern Walnut Creek Trail
Southern Walnut Creek Trail
Ann and Roy Butler Trail (only electric bicycles)
Barton Creek Greenbelt and other natural areas or nature reserves will remain forbidden.
"PARD recognizes that several routes, including paths through environmental parks with limited connectivity, pathways close to recreational facilities such as playgrounds, and lanes through natural areas such as greenbelt and nature conservation, are designed and built only by recreational users, and today, roads "This road does not have the capacity, surface or width to safely accommodate electric motorbikes or scooters," said the memo.
Parks and Recreation data shows more than 1,600 scooters without dock already on the streets of Austin, and companies including Lime and Bird plan to bring thousands of people to the city.
City officials hope the trail program will help leaders find out what changes need to be made to the city code to keep wheeled pedestrians and scooters or safe cyclists.
