Berbatov – Get behind Sterling!
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov said the punishment received by Raheem Sterling on Wednesday was the referee's fault, and the reaction to the incident showed that winger needed more support from the media.
Manchester City were really great against Shakhtar on Wednesday, scoring some great goals and playing good football. But the headlines are about Raheem Sterling's 'win' penalty.
That is one of the things that can happen when you don't put your feet together properly. This is certainly not intentional but the mistake is from the referee who calls it a violation, no one else.
I knew there was a famous opportunity when Robbie Fowler told the referee that he had given the wrong penalty, but it was not the player's job to do that, and I did not see what Sterling had fussed about. What will the ref do? Cancel the sentence? That didn't happen when Fowler spoke to the referee.
And on the suggestion that City should have lost a penalty, Berbatov said it would not be in City's mind.
Could it be that Gabriel Jesus had missed the sentence intentionally? Impossible! The striker wants to score.
Sterling is a player who seems to draw whatever negative news he does, but this should not overshadow what he did during the game – he scored a fantastic goal, and played very well.
This is one of the best and most important players in England and the British media should be behind it – support your own players!
