Card on the table: The artifact is out

I've played a little, but I'm not sure if the game artifacts ‘Dota but the cards’ from the Beatles and Richard Garfield will consume every thought, or if I reflect it like hard cheese. One of them both.

I will find out, because it was just launched on Steam.

Yep, there is a new Valve game in the wild. I can't write it every week.

The Artifact uses the Dota 2 hero and its three-lane dynamics, and turns it into a confusing complex card game that promises deeper than any TCG you've ever seen. I played several matches in the beta, and I can prove that it is not empty marketing.

This is what is seen – when Valve tries to make it look not as light as possible.

It warmed my heart to see a big red axeman overcoming physical existence by jumping into a blazing white rectangle that had just fallen from the sky. It brings Ax to the plane where battles involve more blatant numbers, and gremlins dance in a fictional game that represents important moments in the land-Dota that are changed by witches who bend over time. That was explained in this introductory comic, and this first launch day.

I only played a few matches, so I still stuck my neck to the appropriate Dota-esque learning curve. You get one hand card to take care of three paths, and win by crashing into a tower in two of them or doubling one path to spend Ancient. The structure forms the bottom of the stack of equipment, equipment, lane upgrades, and hero abilities that constantly threaten to knock you down and destroy you.

To get started, you have to pay £ 16 / € 18 / $ 20, which captures two decks, ten random card packages, and five "event tickets" to enter the competitive mode to win more cards. If you are successful enough at the event, you can get a ticket again, even though at first I didn't expect that.

More money can (and is likely to) be spent on additional card packages and event tickets, as well as individual cards from Steam Community Market. The monetization model is reported to be less stingy than planned, although I still see the gap of money open in front of me.
