Some experts warned on Thursday at a conference about smoking in the Algarve that it was important to enlighten young people about the neurological and respiratory effects of marijuana use on health, whose risks tend to be undervalued.
According to biological researcher Teresa Summavielle, the fact that this psychoactive drug is also used for medical purposes causes "confusion," which can lead to a "perception of reduced risk" of the brain, above all among teenagers.
On the other hand, the president of the Brazilian Society of Pneumology and Physiology, José Miguel Chatkin, warned of the effects of cannabis use on the respiratory system, which states that until now it has not been possible to prove the relationship between consumption and increase the likelihood of developing lung cancer.
According to researchers from the Institute of Research and Innovation in Health from the University of Porto, consumption of cannabis that often can lead to the development of psychiatric diseases and behaviors similar to those observed in patients with schizophrenia. "It is very important to do, from the start in schools, a clear policy to study the impact of these components: tobacco, marijuana and other medicines," Teresa Summavielle told Lusa.
