One of the hard realities of aging is that body parts begin to sag. Along with all common areas, such as the chin or eyelids, most men will see that their balls begin to sit a little lower than in their young years. In most cases, this is completely normal, Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, M.D. and urologist at Orlando Health.
So what causes your ball to sag?
Let's talk about why your testicles hang your body in the first place: "They [testicles] want to be a little cooler than other body parts because that's the ideal temperature for sperm production, "said Brahmbhatt Men's Health. Loose scrotum skin allows your ball to hang lower, away from your body, when your internal temperature rises, like after a gym. When you are in a cold room, the testicles shrink closer to your body for warmth.
As we age, the skin loses collagen, which causes the dermis to become thin and stretchy. This causes saggy skin, which can also affect your genitals. There is no magic age that this change began to occur, but Brahmbhatt said most of his patients began to see differences in their 60s or 70s.
What's normal, and when is the loose ball a problem?
Of course, some slack occurs naturally, and there is no "normal" length.
"I don't think anyone has ever done research to measure how much the average rate of decline in all of America is," said Brahmbhatt.
Usually, low hanging testicles are not a problem unless it affects the quality of your life. Excessive slack can make it difficult to find clothes, sleep, or even go to the bathroom, he said.
"Stretching can eventually cause pain," he said.
However, sometimes the testicles may appear saggy due to medical problems. Inguinal hernias, which occur when tissue pierces through the abdominal muscles, can make the ball appear more saggier. So is the cyst. If everything seems wrong, go check.
How do you prevent low hanging balls?
Your best bet is to follow the basics to maintain skin health, advises Brahmbhatt. These include not smoking, avoiding sun exposure, limiting alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy weight, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Some studies show that diets that contain lots of sugar can accelerate aging, according to a paper published on Journal of Clinical Dermatology and Aesthetics.
How do you treat loose testicles?
You may have heard that certain exercises can prevent the ball from sagging. Or that masturbation is less able to make the ball excited. Nothing is true, said Brahmbhatt. And before you switch to Google for all types of lotions and potions, there is no medicine or cream that works.
In fact, there is only one treatment that is tried-and-true: Scrotoplasty. "We basically removed the extra skin and tried to tighten it," explained Brahmbhatt. However, this is usually only done when saggy skin affects the quality of life of men.
