Cayetano guarantees unity, the independence of the 18th Congress

MANILA – Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano on Sunday said the 18th Congress would remain united and independent, even as speculation continued about the "coup" against him.

In a live video on his Facebook page, Cayetano said the 18th Congress would work hand in hand with branches of government and other relevant institutions, without losing its independence.

He also rejected allegations that intimidation and other problems damaged the election of the next DPR leader.

"So, the doon po may be held captive, may be scared, may it be nangyayari, siguro po, & yan na lang po? advocacy, the party list is all here, "Cayetano said.

(So for those who spread rumors about threats and pressure, maybe they are just a few dissatisfied parties for tomorrow, but the main political parties, blocks, advocacy groups, party list groups are all here.)

Cayetano, too, maintains Rep. Davao City Paolo Duterte will become Deputy Chairperson of the DPR for political affairs.

Cong. Duterte and Cayetano will hold separate breakfast meetings on Monday, before State of the Nation Address.

In an earlier interview on Sunday at the ANC, Representative Albay Joey Salceda said at least 194 congressmen would meet with Cong. Duterte on Monday.

When asked if there was a "coup" brewed against Cayetano, Salceda did not directly answer the question but said Paolo Duterte, as the President's son, was a "more direct route" to President Duterte.

During Sunday's meeting, Cayetano presented Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez as the next Majority Leader. He also said that after 15 months, Rep. Marinduque Lord Allan Velasco will be the next Speaker of the House.

The House of Representatives will elect a new leader when the 18th Congress opens on Monday.
