Why loss of smell, taste is a blessing for many Covid patients: The Indian Tribune

New Delhi, 22 November

Amid the growing Covid-19 fear, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If you completely lose your smell and taste along with stomach problems (read diarrhea) when the Covid-19 symptoms start to appear, be careful because this usually means a good prognosis and no severe respiratory attacks that usually occur in the second week of viral cycle 14 day.

Observed worldwide, this phenomenon has now been documented by Indian health experts – entering the 10th month of the Covid-19 pandemic – and according to them, Covid-19 patients who show severe symptoms or end up in ICU generally do not provide a history of loss of smell or taste. which is actually.

Those who observe the loss of smell and taste caused by the coronavirus generally experience a very strong salty or sweet taste, and the water tasted very sweet. If they try perfume, the alcohol part dominates the sense of smell without any scent. And it takes 3-4 weeks for the smell or taste or both to return.

According to Dr Arun Lakhanpal, chest doctor, Interventional and Critical Care pulmonary specialist, at Noida-based Yatharth Hospital, if the actual loss of smell and taste occurs in the Covid disease setting, which he is observing more frequently now, it indicates a good prognosis. .

“It is increasingly being noticed that people with loss of smell and taste that occur in about 40 percent of patients are generally a good prognostic sign,” said Dr Lakhanpal, who and his team have helped thousands of Covid-19 patients recover and come back. healthy home.

Dr Sushila Kataria, Senior Director, Internal Medicine Department, Medanta who also leads the Covid team at the Gurgaon-based hospital, supports Lakhanpal’s observations.

“Yes, most of the patients who lose smell and taste according to my observations do not have serious illnesses. They don’t need oxygen support and most of them don’t need hospitalization, “Kataria told IANS.

“So on the one hand I feel the loss of taste and the sensation of smell is a good sign. And it is a kind of prognostic factor that the patient’s condition will not get worse. “

The cause of the loss of smell and taste and diarrhea in Covid is not certain.

“Sometimes the taste can be lost because there is a loss of smell because the two senses are intertwined. And it is said that the cause is the corona virus which infects the cells around the nerves to smell and taste. It can recover within a week or even after the patient turns Covid-negative, ”explained Lakhanpal.

It may take three to four weeks for your smell and taste to regain, but reassuringly, the condition can be improved.

We must realize that the loss of smell and taste does not only occur with the corona virus.

It can also occur in a number of conditions, such as rhinitis, sinusitis, brain tumors, with some medications and diarrhea can occur with various chest or stomach infections.

Another observation is that most of the people who have lost their sense of smell and taste are young.

“But I have also observed some elderly patients who complain of this loss of sensation, and it’s usually a mild case. If a person suddenly experiences loss of taste and sensation of smell, then they should isolate themselves. It’s always COVID-19 and because these patients themselves may be a little symptomatic but they have the potential to spread the infection, ”advises Kataria.

Don’t take these symptoms lightly and isolate yourself, get tested for Covid-19 and follow all infection control practices.

Monitor your temperature with a thermometer in the mouth every four hours and oxygen levels with the aid of a pulse oximeter and seek medical help in case of fever or decreased oxygen saturation.

“We are still studying about the coronavirus and looking at newer and newer complications,” said Lakhanpal. – IANS
