British scientists argue for a tax on red meat

British scientists affiliated with Oxford University called for a tax on red meat. The introduction of such taxes can benefit health in many countries, they argue. Scientists estimate that by 2020 around 2.4 million deaths worldwide will be caused by consumption of red meat. In addition, he provided $ 285 billion in public health costs. He published about their studies in the scientific journal Plos One.

Working with research centers in the United States and the United Kingdom, they are trying to achieve optimal taxation on red meat in 149 countries to cover as much as possible related health care costs. Around the world they achieve the desired average tax rate of 16% in red meat and in western countries which should be 20%. In processed meat products, the tax rate must be much higher. The optimal tax rate for red meat will produce around $ 172 billion worldwide and thus account for 70% of the damage caused by consumption of meat products to the public.

In their research, scientists mainly focused on the consequences for public health, but they also mentioned indirectly the effects on CO2 emissions in their publications. Taxes will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100 million tons, mainly due to lower consumption of beef.
