If the weather allows, some of the lunar eclipses will be seen Tuesday from Switzerland, starting at 22 hours. Next will take place in May 2022.

A partial lunar eclipse will be observed late Tuesday from Switzerland, if weather permits. About two thirds of Earth's satellites will be in the shadows.

The phenomenon must begin on Tuesday around 22 hours. The moon will then enter the Earth's shadow, before reaching 11:30 a.m. the maximum hiding is two thirds. For almost three hours, the parts of the Moon will remain under the shadow of the Earth, before leaving around 1:00 Wednesday.

Anyone who misses the event must be patient: the next lunar eclipse that is clearly visible from Central Europe will not occur until May 16, 2022.

Lunar eclipses are the result of interactions between the Sun, Moon and Earth. During such a phenomenon, the Earth stands on the axis between the Sun and the Moon. The full moon then plunges into the shadow that the Earth, illuminated by the sun, projects into the universe.

The Moon orbit plane is about five degrees angled from Earth. The moon usually moves above or under the shadow of the Earth.

Only when the full moon is exactly on one of the two intersections of the Moon and Earth's orbit, then "captured" by the shadow of the Earth. This explains why a lunar eclipse does not occur every time a full moon.
