Barcelona were interested in France but he decided to stay at Atletico Madrid.
He looked ready to move but released a video after the World Cup explained his decision to stay in the Spanish capital.
Messi is arguably the biggest player in the world and many outlets report that he is a key decision maker in Barcelona.
And Griezmann acknowledges that knowing he won't be a star at the Nou Camp plays a part in his choices.
"Is it difficult to reject Barca? It's very difficult," Griezmann told Canal Plus.
"You have Barca who wants you, who calls you, to send the message.
"But then there is the club where you are, where you are an important player and where they build projects around you.
"[And] unconsciously, being a lieutenant Messi might have played a role.
"But my teammates and people at the club [Atleti] do everything, they come to talk to me, they increase my salary.
"They did everything to show that it was my home and that I should not leave.
"It was really complicated, especially for my wife where I woke her up at 3am to talk about it!"
Many have tipped Griezmann for Ballon & Or this year, with Lionel Messi also a competitor.
Griezmann won the World Cup by his side when he scored in the final and also won the Bronze Ball for being the third best player in the tournament.
And he recently admitted he thought he should at least be in the top three for the gong.
"Comparing 2016 and this year, for me, I have to be in the top three," Griezmann told L’Equipe.
"In 2016, I lost two finals and was in third place. This time I won three finals.
"(No) No (no) is not fair, but I want to know what else I can do. I have won three trophies, stood in decisive moments, but I did not choose.
"I thought about it, especially the closer I got it. The Ballon & Or is a prestigious award, and it is the highest you can do as a player. "
