Research: During the Covid crisis, the public trusted specialists and not politicians – in Latvia – News

Hitherto unknown viruses, the Covid-19 disease it causes, self-isolation, quarantine, emergencies have become new and frightening experiences for society as a whole. In times of crisis like that, people actively seek out authorities or guardians who can answer how to do the right thing now.

As in spring, this autumn Latvian residents most often call the infectologist Ugu Dumpi one of the most trusted people, in second place epidemiologist Jurijs Perveščikovs, in third place – doctors, doctors, epidemiologists and scientists in general, regardless of personality learning separately, according to LTV and SKDS.

Pēteris Apinis, the former head of the Medical Association, also enjoys great authority, and he has publicly criticized the Health Ministry’s actions to curb Covid-19. He is in fourth place, ahead of Health Minister Ilze Ņķelis, who is trusted by 4.3% of the population, but Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš is only in 8th place. Aldis Gobzems, the opposite of wearing masks, is the 11th most popular opinion spreader, the survey concluded.

As in spring, about a fifth of respondents trust no one on the matter, the program notes.

The study also concluded that Russian and Ukrainian TV doctors such as Alexander Miyaknikov, Yevgeny Komarovsky, Yelena Kramarenko and Alexei Vodovozov were popular in the Russian-speaking society. network. Therefore, in the overall assessment, these foreign doctors – “youtube” celebrities – enjoy similar or even greater authority than Latvian NMPD director Liene Cipule or president Egils Levits.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko also ranked highly in the spring survey, but is no longer present. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are still standing.

In the study, respondents were asked to evaluate the work of local officials and institutions. Epidemiologist Perevoschikov and infectologist Dumpis were the most positive, followed by the director of the NMPD Cipule. In fourth place was the one rated more positively by politicians – Prime Minister Kariņš. The head of government lags far behind the top three, but he is the only politician who still has a positive balance, slightly more positive than negative. This was followed by Minister of Health Vickel and President of the Levits.

The public considered the work of the Minister of Finance Jānis Reirs, Minister of Education and Science Ilga Šuplinskas, and Minister of Welfare Ramona Petraviča to be the most negative.

Survey participants cited the NMPD and SPKC as the most reliable institutions, followed by the Ministry of Health, but the Cabinet of Ministers and Saeima came last. Compared to spring data, the layout is the same, however

public trust in these institutions has declined. The government lost its position a little faster than others.

Experts explain that this is not due to mistakes in the fight against Covid-19, but because of initiatives that are considered bad in the context of next year’s budget.

SKDS director sociologist Arnis Kaktins explained the minister’s unpopularity with vague tax reforms in a situation where the public felt very insecure: the plague, Covids, lots of uncertainty – will there be jobs or won’t there be jobs? The company will go bankrupt, won’t it go bankrupt?

The head professor of the RSU, philosopher Vents Sīlis, points out that the number of cases and deaths in Latvia is very low, due to the Latvian medical care system. “Basically, the current situation in Latvia is a direct result of the work of doctors.

The government is now grateful to doctors for their presence, who again have no funds to supplement their salaries.

The government is more interested in looking beautiful in their own eyes. Surprisingly, they care more about saying we do what we can than actually doing something. This can be felt especially in the way of taxation and treatment of cultural workers whose income is getting worse, “said Sīlis.
