Jerusalem takes on a new mayor in round 2 of the city election

The Israelis chose their mayor in many locations throughout the country, with a main focus on the largest city in Jerusalem.

Tuesday's vote marks the second round of city elections in cities where no candidate has the support of at least 40 percent in the October 30 election. The closest running race is in Jerusalem, the capital preached by Israel and a place of pilgrimage for billions throughout the world.

The race featured Moshe Lion, an old political kit supported by many of the country's top leaders, against Ofer Berkovitch, a young secular activist who pushed for a progressive agenda against religious extremists.

Jerusalem is also the poorest city in Israel. Its diverse population is divided almost equally between Palestinian Arabs, ultra-Orthodox Jews and the rest of the Jewish population – both secular and observant.
