Severe, Cancerous Cases and Costs in Indonesia are Increasingly Swollen

The cost of financing cancer ranks third after heart and kidney failure

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) warned that cancer needs to be the concern of all parties. Because, the number of cases and funding for treatment by the Social Security Administering Agency (BPJS) tends to increase from year to year.

"Cancer needs our attention because of the huge cases and financing costs," said the Head of Sub Directorate of Cancer and Blood Vessels at the Ministry of Health when filling out the Law and Health Seminar entitled "Protection of Cancer Patients' Rights to Quality Health Service Access in JKN Era , in the Ministry of Health building, in Jakarta, Thursday (8/11).

He cited Cancer GLOBOCAN data that the highest percentage of cancer in men was lung cancer as much as 14 percent of total cancers or as many as 22,440 cases, followed by colorectal cancer occupying 11.9 percent or 19,113 cases.

While the most cancer experienced by women is breast with a percentage of 30.9 percent or as many as 58,256 cases. Then followed by cervical cancer (cervix) as much as 17.2 percent or 32,469 cases.

The problem is not there because the cost of treatment is also swollen. He quoted based on BPJS Health data, the burden of financing cancer health services from year to year continues to increase.

"It even ranks third after heart and kidney failure," he said.

He cited if the financing of cancer in 2014 still spent Rp 1.9 trillion and then increased the following year to Rp 2.5 trillion.

"Then in 2016 it rose again to as much as 2.7 trillion and 2017 increased by Rp. 3.1 trillion. That happened because more than 70 percent of cancer patients came to health facilities in an advanced stage," he said.

That is, he said, which makes financing the deadly disease high.
