The ISCHEMIA Study Finds No Evidence of Lesser Heart Event After a Heart Procedure

The chair of the study, Judith Hochman, MD, discussed the results of the ISCHEMIA Study (International Study on the Effectiveness of Comparative Health with a Medical and Invasive Approach), an international study funded by the federal government. The study found no evidence that patients with severe but stable heart disease who underwent heart procedures experienced lower rates of disease compared to those treated with medication and lifestyle changes alone.

Presented November 16 at the 2019 American Heart Association Scientific Session, this study found that patients undergoing routine invasive procedures – such as stent implants or bypass surgery – when compared to patients who only received drugs such as aspirin or statins and lifestyle advice, saw no reduction in incidence rates for groups of five events: cardiovascular death, heart attack, hospitalization for unstable angina, hospitalization for heart failure, or resuscitation after cardiac arrest.
