Pregnant women who take fish oil supplements every day during pregnancy tend not to give birth prematurely, according to a new scientific study.
For a long time, pregnant women have been warned to limit oily fish and avoid certain fish because of concerns about pollutants and mercury exposure. However, according to scientists, those who consume more omega-3 fatty acids are far less likely to give birth before the end. Researchers have recently found that taking fish oil supplements every day during pregnancy can reduce the chances of preterm birth by 42%.. This finding is very convincing that they suggest that pregnant women start taking cod liver oil tablets every day from 12 weeks of age.
The study found that an 11% increase in fatty acids found in oily fish such as salmon and mackerel reduced the risk of birth by 11% by 37 weeks. The risk of giving birth before 34 weeks decreased by 42% and the possibility of having a small baby weighing less than 2.4 kg decreased by 10%.
At present there are several solutions to prevent premature birth. However, it is the leading cause of death among children under 5 years worldwide. Scientists suggest that taking a daily capsule containing between 500 and 1,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids from 12 weeks can help reduce risk.
Researchers from the Institute of Health Research and Medicine at the University of Adelaide, Australia (SAHMRI) and Women's and Children's Hospitals reviewed the results of trials with 20,000 women. They studied two types of omega 3 fatty acids – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are found in the oil of salmon and fish, including cod liver oil.
They found that there was "high quality proof"Omega-3 supplements are effective strategies for reducing preterm birth. Experts believe that this can work by reducing the strength of hormones leading to premature birth. "Because there are not many choices to prevent preterm birth, this new discovery is very important for pregnant women, babies, and health care professionals who care for them." We do not fully understand the causes of preterm birth. Therefore, predicting and preventing premature birth is always a challenge, which is one of the reasons why omega-3 supplements during pregnancy are very attractive to researchers around the world.said Professor Philippa Middleton of SAHMRI added that it was important to ensure that the capsules contained at least 500 mg of DHA.
