Qatar Airways organizes a tour on board the Eye of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital


DOHA: Orbis Mata Terbang Hospital, working with Qatar Airways, hosting a public and private tour in a one-of-a-kind aircraft, and holding board workshops, including Care and Ophthalmology sessions, in support of Doha Healthcare Week and to celebrate Qatar Creating Vision Initiative, funded by the Qatar Development Fund and led by Orbis.

The Flying Eye Hospital, which is operated by Orbis global eye charity, is an MD-10 cargo aircraft complete with advanced medical equipment, operating rooms and classrooms, making it a truly unique teaching facility. Mata Terbang Orbis Hospital has supported the Qatar Creating Vision initiative in Bangladesh at the end of last year.

Since July 2016, 4.2 million screenings for children have been conducted throughout India and Bangladesh and more than 56,000 training sessions have been provided for medical professionals and teachers and community workers. Together, Orbis and the Qatar Development Fund are on track to provide 5.6 million impressive eye care for children throughout India and Bangladesh in mid-2020.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said: "This is a very commendable initiative from Orbis that makes us proud to be supporters of global eye health charities. Since 2012, we have collaborated with Mata Terbang Hospital to expand its reach and help prevent blindness that can be avoided throughout the world.

Orbis UK's Chief Executive, Rebecca Cronin, said: "Through the Qatar Fund for Development, we have been able to reach millions of children throughout India and Bangladesh. There are 473,000 children who are blind in two countries, and 50 percent of cases can be avoided.
