Among the various types of cancer that occur in Colombia, breast cancer is the first cause of death for women and it is estimated that by 2020 more than 11 thousand cases will be diagnosed where there will be more than 3,400 deaths. The problem for humans is not much different.
Once a year in the country, 10,962 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed and one third of these cases result in death. It is estimated that by 2020, 13,715 cases will be diagnosed and there will be 4,150 deaths.
In this country, 90% of affected patients are over 60 years old, while the lowest number is concentrated in groups of men under 40 years. Areas where there is a higher prevalence are Bogotá D.C., Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Atlántico, Caldas, Quindío and Huila with incidents of 70.5 to 147.6 per 100,000 male population.
That is why Astellas Farma Colombia with the support and participation of patient associations such as the RASA Foundation, Vital Return, Simmon Foundation, among others and the general public, launched this month, the campaign "Prostate your priorities. Together for the same cause."
"The numbers surrounding prostate cancer are important and increasing, and today many men may suffer from this disease, even without realizing it. For this reason, we have decided to make this campaign, because we are trying to raise awareness and make men and women aware about the key to detecting disease in time, "said Andrés López, Access Manager for Astellas Farma Colombia.
The campaign aims to extend the invitation to men over 40 years of age to undergo two exams each to detect prostate cancer in a timely manner: prostate-specific antigen testing and digital rectal examination, to detect any signs or symptoms in time; and women to care for their husbands, parents, friends or relatives, accompany them in this process.
