More than 40% of the gay population use condoms intermittently. This is part of the conclusion of the first survey about the behavior of men who have sex with men. This research seeks to be the basis for the development of safe sexual practices to prevent HIV
Regarding this, the leader of the Homosexual Integration and Liberation Movement (Movilh), Rolando Jiménez, said that for more than a year they had worked in the development of the HIV area, which was responsible for prevention and support for those who lived with crime. "We recognize that there is a high prevalence of young homosexuals who come to the office asking for support and guidance, and that it is a growing problem and we must have information about the sexual practices of young people between the ages of 15 and 29. That is why this survey was conducted, which includes more than 1,200 people, "he said.
And, the results are dramatic: 40% use condoms intermittently and the age of sexual initiation from the gay male population is getting early. "We recognize that there is a large deficit where children get information for safe sexual practices. This reinforces the need to have public policies on comprehensive sexual education that began at an early age," he added.
Jimenez argues that there is a low risk perception because treatment has made it a chronic disease so that fear is lost, allowing the virus to continue to grow. With this study they sought to improve strategies to influence safe sexual practices.
Among other points, the need to produce a protocol that regulates the use of PrEP pills (PrEP) will be given by the State since 2019 in Chile to prevent the virus from being handled. This can reduce more than 90% chance of contracting the virus during sexual practice if consumed every day. Therefore, there must be a protocol that guides people about the real effects and encourages them to privilege safe sexual practices, because it is not the idea that tablets cause relaxation.
