A group of researchers identified areas that were potentially dangerous an earthquake of magnitude 8 can occur.
They are around 200 kilometers in length that covers the coastal region of the Valparaíso and Coquimbo regions to Vilos. Zones generate special attention because they are areas that have not been affected by large seismic events since July 1730.
This research was led by geologists and academics from the Department of Geophysics at Concepcion University, Marcos Moreno Switt. The team found two more shallow contact zones between Nazca and the South American plate in front of Valparaíso.
Studies include observations through GPS and seismic stations, added to numerical models.
According to the slogan BioBioChile the zone in question will be blocked, namely them gather energy for future egg movements.
Switt explained that "when the roughness between the plates is blocked, it accumulates that elastic energy will be released in a big earthquake"
