Mate 20 Pro | We evaluate Huawei's new smartphone | ANALYSIS | Technology and science | Cellphone

A few weeks ago – just hours after the global launch in London – I wrote a note where it makes a clear impression Huawei I have left myself, after launching the new Mate Series 20 into the world: I don't want to be a player anymore, I don't want to pat my shoulder. For the first time – at least for me – he felt that the Chinese company played all the cards. He put all the chips on the table. He shouted at the world what the stakes were. Maybe this might seem like an exaggeration, but I think with the Mate 20 Series, Huawei is ready to compete with the same footing as its competitors, from the point of view of design, hardware and software.

For three weeks I have tested the Mate 20 Pro, the most modern equipment of this new family Huawei (The Mate 20 only has a few things lacking and Mate 20 X points, above all, to the segment & # 39; gamers & # 39;). I have it as the main smartphone. Honestly, the experience was very good and I anticipated something a note with my first impression of the team. From P9 Huawei explains that the priority is to have the best camera to take the best photos easily. However, videos always become paralyzed feet.

Decision? The Mate 20 Pro shows great progress Huawei in its global proposal and shows a very mature proposal. The best of all, especially for brand fans, is that he still has a roof to continue offering more.

Next we will review what are the main characteristics of a new smartphone Huawei, Mate 20 Pro:

The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei That was impressive at first glance. One of the things that caught my attention since the beginning of three teams (Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X) seemed very light.
Huawei has further refined the design and now looks more premium than before.

But, no doubt, the most interesting is the placement of the camera behind. They are no longer arranged horizontally, side by side; or vertically, one under the other. In Mate 20 Pro of Huawei, three cameras are placed in a box, accompanied by a flash, resembling one of the faces of a dice. Speaking with newspaper photographers, he told me that – for his understanding – it was the most logical way to place a camera, because it was possible to have a more complete vision.

Another thing that stands out is the color variation available today. If for P20 Pro the color that causes a sensation is Twilight, in the case of the Mate 20 Pro all seen taken by emerald green (available in Peru with only one operator). Of course: the color has been weakened to make it attractive, but without attracting too much attention. Oh, yes: I think Huawei It's not so good with pink (it won't be available in this country).

Having it in hand is impossible to notice that in the Pro Mate 20 there are some inspirations in a more modern model than other brands: the screen is elongated, the edges are smaller, the cerquillo is notch or striking (even though there are several sensors), curvature of the screen, etc. But, it's also good for reading both. Today everyone does that, because it is a trend. Huawei it adopts that tendency too and they are revealed in this Mate 20 Series.

Even though the device has a 6.4-inch screen, Mate 20 Pro is very ergonomic and we get into trouble when we want to manipulate it with just one hand, especially if it's not too big. As we usually do Huawei, this device also includes a rubber housing that allows us to start using a certain layer of security and that facilitates grip.

One new thing from Huawei Mate 20 Pro is using a Kirin 980 processor. What should you know about it? It works really well, that it is very strong, and that you will realize it. Under normal use (even in heavy use) you will not get "tired" equipment. Of course you will read that this processor is 7 nanometers and that is very important. Do you know why? Because they have achieved better performance, with lower energy consumption and greater heat dissipation.

The terminal that I tested was 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. More than enough. However, on the Mate 20 Pro Huawei officially introduced the new Nano Memory Card technology, a new standard memory card, but we have no certainty whether it will be a global use. Just then will know.

With regard to batteries, the Mate 20 Pro Huawei An increase has been noted that users will definitely appreciate. The 4,200 mAh allows us to have a range that easily exceeds one day. In my special case, I start at 7 am with a load of 100%. At 10 a night the team usually reaches 30%. I no longer need to charge it at night. The next morning, at 6 am Usually it consumes on average 3% more.

And here's the best: Pro Mate 20 from Huawei equipped with a wall adapter with Super Charge technology that allows you to charge up to 70% of the battery in just half an hour (you can see the demonstration HERE) It comes with Qi technology that allows wireless charging and not only that: the same equipment becomes an external battery, with the ability to be a wireless charger from behind. Yes, you can provide power to other devices compatible with wireless charging.

This is where the big attraction of this new team is concentrated. Already with P20 Pro Huawei It marks a milestone regarding the quality of photography offered by mobile devices. And when it seems like you can't do much more, the Mate 20 Pro arrives. Is that a dramatic increase in the quality of the camera designed together with Leica? Not. But, all major advancements are taken into account. The best thing is that it is not only limited to photos, but has greatly improved in terms of video.

In particular, I appreciate the inclusion of a wide-angle lens because it is always useful. I believe that if a telephone is used for recording, for example, travel, wide angles are the basis for capturing buildings and scenarios in all their splendor. That can be done by the Mate 20 Pro Huawei. Now, if you add that it's possible to take nocturnal photos (which have surprised us with the P20 Pro and which have now been upgraded) or artificial intelligence in accordance with the configuration so you get more from each shot, there is still a lot of fun.

As for artificial intelligence applied to photos, I think it has been fixed. When configuring each available scene, the color is dimmed slightly better and the shots no longer come out as bright as before. Several new scenarios have been added (such as Historic Buildings). In Mate 20 Pro of Huawei Blur effect has also been improved. The edges are more precise and the ends are usually good, as long as the background lighting conditions and objects are the best.

Portrait mode has also been improved. Several functions have been added which add effects (such as stained glass, blind, etc.) that transfer images depicted to other backgrounds. And another innovation from Mate 20 Pro Huawei is that the camera has a Supermacro mode, which allows real close-ups with very interesting and striking results.

In the subject of video there is also an interesting increase. One lens of the Mate 20 Pro Huawei It has an electronic image stabilizer. It's not the best, but it's very helpful. The picture quality is good. This allows recording in 4K and no longer for a limited time, but at the user's discretion. When the lighting is bad, he also does interesting work. The best of all is that it has a ceiling to enhance and continue to surprise users.

Finally, artificial intelligence also began to be used in cameras. The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei This brings the coloring function by artificial intelligence, where you can store colored objects while the background remains black and white. There is also an unfocused background mode, which allows recording videos with that effect. They are very interesting and with a humorous spirit that is clear, but they don't work well every day. It is in a scenario with controlled movement and lighting where they can provide better results. YOU CAN SEE THE COMPLETE GALLERY HERE.

The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei no longer has a speaker at the bottom, but retains stereo sound. How to? That's right This device offers stereo sound using the top speaker and … C-type USB connector. That's right, lower output also works for audio. Of course, when you load equipment or have the entries occupied it will reduce quality.

As for security, Mate 20 Pro Huawei offers PIN (six digits), patterns, face recognition and fingerprint reader. The latter is novelty: the sensor is no longer in front, or behind. Now below the screen. It takes a little time to get used to the location of these sensors and, to be honest, this works well but is not as accurate or as fast as other sensors that Chinese companies have shown us. However, on the other hand, facial recognition is very good. Quick and precise. The important thing is that you can finally have three layers of security that protect your equipment, ensuring your information.

This equipment is equipped with an EMUI 9 customization layer from Huawei, which has developed a lot in the latest version. Try to facilitate certain tasks, look for the best use experience. It offers, for example, the possibility of removing the Android navigation button and replacing it with gesture control, in the style of new models of the Apple brand.

In London presentations several functions are presented, but they are not yet available (they offer that they will arrive with successive updates): some problems with the camera, 3D scanning for object virtualization, augmented reality, among others. But there is a possibility that during the week of sales to the public Mate 20 Pro Huawei now the software update is ready.

On Tuesday, November 6 – just three weeks after its global launch – the Huawei Pro Mate 20 is officially presented in Peru. It was announced that the device would be available with four operators (Movistar, Claro, Entel and Bitel), but there were no details about the prices given.

The Mate 20 Pro from Huawei enter online pre-sales from 7 to 15 November. Also, it was announced that one of the offers for continued sales would be a package that would also include wireless chargers and 360 cameras. Other offers included the Huawei Watch GT.

As I anticipated, it seems to me that with the Mate 20 Pro Huawei finally managed to have a "round" of the telephone, which not only stood out in several functions, but was efficient in other aspects. Beyond prices, I believe that with this device Huawei can face without problems with the most modern cellphones of the competition. The real competition starts now.
