Maybe this is one of the most unknown fields of science for most people. The closest approach to the subject has been through science fiction films, where many times Artificial Intelligence (AI) he escaped planned control and efforts against humanity.
That might be one of the biggest prejudices that exist about Artificial Intelligence. But what is true in all these myths?
John Atkinson He has a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh, who has spent much of his life studying this subject.
Atkinson always wanted to know more about this area, which is why he then destroyed and confirmed some myths created in the collective imagination.
Does Artificial Intelligence applied in companies imply a reduction in work?
Reality AI will automate tasks that are less routine so they can reduce "traditional" work. However, this is not typical of AI, because the incorporation of conventional information technology has produced the same impact several years ago.
For example, the procedure that must be carried out by the customer personally in the branch, is now done in electronic form from your cellphone or your home.
Can future Artificial Intelligence tempt humans?
Reality Although in a clear operating level of an organization, it is out of reach. However, at the international strategic level it can finally occur in several regions.
For example, in the defense industry, autonomous weapons have been conceptualized, which of course, if not controlled, can affect not only the community but also humanity. Therefore, several international organizations advocate and demand that the use of AI in defense is prohibited.
Is Artificial Intelligence applied to transport as aircraft or buses implying more risk of accidents, than those driven by men?
Myth The use of AI for autonomous driving of various types of vehicles has been long and in general there are many benefits rather than risks.
For example, in commercial aircraft, flight mode "autopilot" (GPS guided) has been used for years. Achieving autonomy both in flight and takeoff / landing is only a matter of time.
Also, the engine is not "tired" while driving, it has perceptual information that is not owned by human drivers, can be "trained" with absolute respect for the law, can predict the situation on the previous route.
At some point, can Artificial Intelligence create feelings in robots?
Reality There is an AI model that allows not only machines to reason based on their emotions, but also on their intentions and beliefs about the "world" they feel.
On the other hand, the incorporation of emotions and beliefs is very important for practical interaction with humans and their adoption. For example, depending on the intentions, emotions, and beliefs of a machine, the customer's commercial requirements can be met, in one way or another a very different and abusive way.
Is there a possibility that in some future Artificial Intelligence outlines a chip that allows you to store memories that someone chooses from memory (as the Black Mirror chapter shows)?
Reality In aspects related to memory, there is important progress both in understanding where it is and the electro-chemical information involved by the neural circuits of our brain.
Extracting this information and transferring it to some "physical" devices is not only feasible, but there are already organizations that offer medium term, this type of "service" is even beyond someone's "death", where both awareness as memory can be transferred to "avatars" representing post mortem.
Artificial intelligence is full of a world of peculiarities and elements that are unknown to many people.
These problems, like others like Cybersecurity, Environment and Innovation are things that are being handled by different experts – both national and international – at the Public Innovation Meeting, which runs until Friday, November 30 at the Naval Polytechnic Academy (APOLINAV), in Valparaíso.
Workshops and talks are free for all interested publics. For more information about schedules and conferences, you can enter this link.
