XDA Top Smartphones in 2018

This year is coming to an end and we will soon announce the arrival in 2019. With the trend of new smartphones already in existence, it's time we reflect on the past year. We have seen the emergence of many new technologies, while we also say goodbye to some of the older ones. Our mobile phones are faster and smarter, and there are no signs that growth will slow down in the near future.

But there are so many smartphones released every year. If you are looking for a new smartphone in the coming weeks, then how can you decide what to get? There is so much to choose from, and they all have their own habits and downfalls. Here at XDA, we took the time to reflect on last year and ask all of our writers to choose what their favorite smartphone is that year. Even though you might have a rough idea about what you think of the best cellphone of the year in each category, our author might surprise you.

The Best Featured Devices for Value: OnePlus 6T

I believe OnePlus 6T is the best device in this category. This is a very good player, has great battery life, maximizes screen real estate as much as possible with the most annoying notch design, and the software is the most familiar to someone who has been a Nexus / Android stock fanboy for years. There are some devices on the market that are better than 6T in certain aspects, especially in terms of cameras, but I don't think there are devices that are better at everything. So, why spend hundreds of extra dollars to get a cellphone that is only slightly better than the OnePlus 6T?

The Best Featured Devices for Features: Huawei Mate 20 X

Huawei Mate 20 X is my personal favorite this year. It has an almost bezel-less notch design than the Huawei Mate 20 combined with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro's camera settings. It also has the latest Kirin 980, making it one of the very few excellent smartphones. I like big phones, and Mate 20 X is the best big Android smartphone on the market. That makes the Galaxy Note 9 look small compared. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Mate 20 Pro like 40W fast charging, wireless charging, or opening a 3D face lock, but the 7.2 "big screen can't be defeated. This is the first real smartphone I feel comfortable watching TV shows and movies.

Best Overall Middle Class Tool: Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1

Xiaomi has long been the king of middle-class smart phones, but the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 gives the Redmi Note 5 a plus. Asus chose Android which is almost stocked on the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and inserted a large 5,000 mAh battery into it. This is not the best in taking pictures or making videos (EIS is disabled by default), but Google Camera ports can help improve ordinary cameras to be acceptable. It's a shame that the best middle class devices never come to America, where the only decent mid-ranger that is not charged for arms and legs is the Nokia 7.1.

Best Overall Low-end Device: Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite

Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite is an amazing device at the lower class level. If you end up buying a budget device, you often sacrifice long-term software support. That does not apply to Mi A2 Lite. This is an Android One device which means running basically Android supplies and has 2 years of guaranteed software updates and monthly Android security patches. Even though Snapdragon 625 is quite old at the moment, there is a reason why this is so exploited by Xiaomi – it's not bent. The Mi A2 Lite has a respectable 4,000 mAh battery that helps the mobile easily last all day.

Best design: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

This is a close race between the Honor Magic 2 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. Both smartphones have almost entirely bezel-less fronts thanks to the slider mechanism, but the Honor Magic 2 has neat gradation colors while the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has a distinctive Xiaomi ceramic body. Jade Green Mi Mix 3 has the best overall design in my view, but Honor Magic 2 at Gradient Blue is really close.

Best New Software Features: Night Vision

Although they were not the first to hit the scene with the night mode camera feature, Google was the first to nail with Night Sight on Pixel 3. OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Huawei / Honor all have their own night mode features, even though Huawei is the closest to Google in terms of quality. Night Sight is a must-have feature this year, and that is evidenced by the fact that so many designers are rushing to port the latest Google Camera applications to their own devices. Google has proven that smartphones with a single back camera can take photos that are as good, if not better, than smartphones with dual, triple or even quad rear cameras.

New Best Hardware Features: Slider camera

I am pleased to see which design trends will dominate in 2019. The year 2018 is clearly a top-notch year, but when the year ends, we see two new trends emerge: camera sliders and display holes. The first was championed by Vivo NEX, Honor Magic 2, and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, while the second was championed by Samsung Galaxy A8s, Huawei Nova 4, and Honor View 20. I am a big fan of slider design, and I see further improvements as a way to front. It's a mild inconvenience to deal with if you often take selfies or rely on face locking, but the flip side is the manufacturer can package all types of sensors behind the screen instead of sacrificing display real estate through larger pieces of screen.

Most improved: Huawei

Without a doubt, Huawei has experienced the most rapid increase in 2018. When you compare the year-to-year improvements that other manufacturers have made with their smartphones, most of you will find that they have made a gradual increase in performance, lifetime battery, and camera quality. But Huawei has made some radical changes to their smartphone ranks in just one year. Compare Huawei Mate 10 Pro with Huawei Mate 20 Pro, for example. The Mate 20 Pro adds fingerprint scanners on the screen, 3D face recognition, faster 40W cable charging, wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, substantial camera enhancements with the addition of 40MP main sensors as part of setting up three rear cameras, wireless desktop mode, and obviously all standard incremental enhancements like better SoCs, bigger batteries, etc. For most devices, the next generation model is hardly feasible to upgrade. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is an exception because it is far better than the Huawei Mate 10 Pro from last year.

The Best Featured Devices for Value: OnePlus 6

OnePlus makes sufficient compromises to offer devices with several top-class superior specifications at medium prices. I actually prefer OnePlus 6 to OnePlus 6T. The rear fingerprint scanner is better and has a headphone jack. If performance and price are the most important things for you, OnePlus 6 is a no-brainer.

The Best Featured Devices for Features: Pixel 3

I will not try to convince you that Pixel 3 has more features than you might find in Samsung flagship, but for its features I Care, Pixel 3 is the best. I want a great camera, a phone that's not too big, frequent and fast updates, and the best Google experience. For this reason, Google Pixel 3 is the perfect mobile phone for me.

Best Overall Middle Class Tool: Nokia 8.1

Software and updates can sometimes be a problem with middle-class devices, so starting with Android Pie is a good thing. Nokia 8.1 will also receive stable updates from HMD Global as part of the Android One program. The design of this device is great for middle-class devices too, with a relatively sleek bezel and high-quality building materials. You even get two cameras on the back.

Nokia 8.1 XDA Forum

Best Overall Low-end Device: Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite

You might know that software is a big problem for me, so Android One is a must have at this range. The high-end device is low-power, so you don't want the software to stop it. Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite is a very good device with a dual camera, large battery, and a good screen. This device was released during Summer with Android Oreo, but Xiaomi has launched an Android Pie update.

Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite XDA Forum

Best design: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

When I think of cellphones from 2018 that look futuristic and cool, Mi Mix 3 is what pops into my head. The front of almost all screens and the sliding mechanism for the camera is a great idea, not to mention fun to be nervous.

Best New Software Features: Night Vision

Night Sight is the first camera "mode" that I consistently use. Many camera modes attract attention and don't have many use cases, but Night Sight is truly amazing. I like it.

New Best Hardware Features: Display of holes for the front camera

I might be in the minority on this one, but I think the display hole (a.k.a. punch punch) looks really cool. I certainly prefer the appearance of the viewing hole above the dreaded notch. You still can't use the screen space which is blocked by the screen hole, but I think it looks better.

Most improved: Important

The Essential Phone received many updates over the past year. It's always a trendy choice for "the best cheap Android phone" because it's often sold, and that's largely thanks to Essential's support. I don't know whether there will be an Essential Phone 2, but Essential has done a lot to become an OEM fan favorite.

The Best Featured Devices for Value: OnePlus 6

The best superior tool for value must be OnePlus 6. The only reason why it is even considered the best is price and hardware. The camera is not good, the device feels cheap, haptics are bad, the speaker is not good, and the display is not good. However, it has Snapdragon 845 and a large battery at a low price for hardware. Even has a headphone jack.

XDA OnePlus 6 Forum

The Best Featured Devices for Features: Huawei Mate 20 Pro

The best device for its features is Mate 20 Pro. This phone has a three camera system, the latest Android version, a fingerprint scanner on the screen, the actual face ID hardware, and the fastest Android SoC on the market. It has the same features every other phone has more pluses. I think so far the best device with the best features.

Huawei X 20 Pro Forum

Best Overall Middle Class Tool: Samsung Galaxy A8s

Samsung Galaxy A8s is the best mid-range device so far. This is one of the first devices to use the new punch hole display format and has a Snapdragon 710. Galaxy A8s runs Android 8.1 and is planned to receive One UI soon. It also has a three camera system with some of the best mid-range cameras.

Best Overall Low-end Device: Huawei P20 Lite

The best low-end device is the Huawei P20 Lite. This device runs EMUI 8 and has some of the best features on a low-end scale. This is a fast and very good device for the price you will spend. If the mid-range and flagships are outside your price range, this is the best phone to get.

Best design: Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Design awards are usually given to Samsung and I think this year is no exception. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is a nice and big device in one of the best blue colors I've ever seen. The perfect curve in this iteration of what actually starts with the Galaxy S6 Edge. It's almost symmetrical and just feels good to hold.

Best New Software Features: Call Screening

The best software features, so far, are Screen Calling from Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. This is the best feature because this is actually useful. Most other mobile phones get these random AI features that are honestly useless. Call Screening is something that works well with friends and spammers. This is good for trolling and for actual use.

New Best Hardware Features: Face ID

The best new hardware feature, specifically for Android phones, is the face ID sensor on the Mate 20 Pro. This technology is currently in the latest iPhone and iPad Pro, but it hasn't really made it to an Android device. Huawei managed to make it work and function properly. Fast and comfortable with safe benefits.

Most improved: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

Mi Mix 3 is the most improved device compared to Mi Mix 2. Within a year they were able to improve specifications, designs, cameras and software without improvement without adding a notch. They use a sliding telephone mechanism and ceramic backs without raising prices.

The Best Featured Devices for Value: OnePlus 6

Yes, OnePlus 6, not 6T. The midrange category has crept up in price over the years, but when Note starts at $ 1,000 dollars, $ 529 is "midrange." As far as this year's OnePlus offer, they are a great device. Both phones run one of our favorite Android types with OxygenOS. Both have a lot of RAM and Snapdragon 845. This year the 6T carries a slightly larger battery, a fingerprint reader that is less reliable on the screen, and the removal of the headphone jack. For me, between 6 and 6T, after using both, 6 is a better purchase.

The Best Featured Devices for Features: Samsung Galaxy Note 9

This is easy for me. Honestly, this cellphone has everything. Note is the culmination of the work of Samsung smartphones. If you buy a very expensive Note 9, you won't want anything – SD Card, tons of RAM, large storage, Snapdragon 845, S-Pen, waterproof, stereo speakers, wireless charging, great camera, headphone jack, and more. The appearance is good, the build quality is very good, and even though the software is good (from former TouchWiz haters), the OneUI is amazing. This phone is as close as possible worth $ 1,000. Buy one.

Best Overall Middle Class Tool: Nokia 7.1

I don't have much experience with budget phones. The easy choice is the Motorola G series, but this year I am more likely to recommend Nokia 7.1. This is a device that looks interesting and Nokia has done some very interesting things with Android and updates. Nokia 7.1 is loaded with Android One and some good quality buildings.

Nokia 7.1 XDA Forum

Best Overall Low-end Device: Motorola One

This is an unlocked device with a large, modern look. It also has an SD slot and a dual SIM. This is an Android One device, so we see fast updates and cleaning Android. It is also equipped with "turbocharging," a decent sized battery, and a headphone jack.

Best design: Huawei Mate 20 Pro

I can't say enough about how beautiful this phone is. Twilight finishing is amazing and unique, and the choice of green and blue with textured glass is also amazing. The camera arrangement on the back looks different. This isn't my favorite cellphone, but I think it's an observer.

Huawei X 20 Pro Forum

Best New Software Features: Call Screening

One of my favorite features, perhaps less well known, is call screening from Google. In the robocall era of spammers, it is great to be able to filter robots with robots. The feature only works, and it feels futuristic when you use it.

New Best Hardware Features: Google Pixel 3 Camera

This one is a bit of a mixture of hardware and software, honest, but I'm always happy and forever happy with the results of this camera. This is an absolute joy that can be relied upon to use. This is to say nothing about Night Sight, which is largely a software feature.

Most improved: Razer 2 phone

Razer took their first phone call and really improved everything about it without changing the core identity of the device. We maintain a beautiful and added appearance of high refresh rates: wireless charging, water resistance, chroma logo, enhanced camera, Snapdragon 845, higher brightness and large cooling space. This phone is quite good at a pretty good price.

The Best Featured Devices for Value: Xiaomi Pocophone F1

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is one of the surprise releases this year, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset at a very low price. This has poor build quality as a start, but companies must take shortcuts to get the lowest possible price.

The Best Featured Devices for Features: Samsung Galaxy Note 9

The Samsung Galaxy S9 has a superior display for most smartphones, the S-Pen with more features above the predecessor of this device, and all the features of Samsung Experience and OneUI. This is nothing to think about – Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is the best mainstay of this year for me.

Best Overall Low-end Device: Xiaomi Redmi Note 5

Even with a confusing naming scheme, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus in China) is a great device at an even better price. Official upgrade support and community developer support cannot be beaten by almost any other cellphone out there.

Best design: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

Best New Software Features: Google Playground / Night Sight

This is a bond for me between Google Playground and Night Sight. Although Google Playground is fun to play, Google Playground can, more often than not, be a gimmick feature. Night Sight is functional, which is why I also chose it.

New Best Hardware Features: Fingerprint sensor on the screen

I always prefer sensors on the back, but being minimalist has made me appreciate sensors hidden below the screen.

Most improved: ASUS ROG mobile

I don't think it will sell but the number of accessories they launch shows that they are making the right effort.

The Best Featured Devices for Value: OnePlus 6

After using both OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 6 took the cake for me as the best seed of 2018 for value. The fast fingerprint sensor and headphone jack is what drives me to this edge. OnePlus 6T has a slightly larger battery, but a larger battery does not justify the sacrifice for me. After using both devices, I can confidently say that I prefer OnePlus 6 rather than OnePlus 6T for value for money, especially considering that it's a bit cheaper too.

The Best Featured Devices for Features: Samsung Galaxy Note 9

I think choosing the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 here is a no-brainer. He has everything, and with everything, I mean literally everything. Fast fingerprint sensor, stylus, great camera, large battery, and even a headphone jack. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is probably the best cellphone for me.

Best Overall Middle Class Tool: Xiaomi Mi A2

I am a big fan of Xiaomi, and the Xiaomi Mi A2 is one of the company's best devices released this year. With the incredible price of the camera, the only disadvantage of this device is the headphone jack. If you can handle it, then this is the right choice. If the headphone jack is a must, then I would recommend the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro instead.

Best design: Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

Best New Software Features: Night Vision

This is not a difficult choice for me at all. Night Sight is a extraordinary feature. This is one of the most surprising features of 2018, and one of the strongest too. I've even used it a lot, something I never expected.

New Best Hardware Features: Fingerprint sensor on the screen

Although I personally don't like the OnePlus 6T in-display fingerprint sensor, I like the idea and find it very cool. I can see manufacturers increasing it even further, and already on smartphones like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro that we see getting faster, more accurate, and overall better.

Most improved: Razer 2 phone

My experience with Razer Phone 2 is above and beyond what the Razer Phone previously owned. Looks good, fast, just a great experience overall with a 120Hz screen too.
