Subaru WRX STI S209 teases before the Detroit 2019 car show
The hotter version of the Subaru WRX STI will come to America, and Subaru on Thursday confirmed the car as S209.
We have known about cars for some time since confirmation of Subaru following the discovery of a trademark application for the name made by the automaker in early December. The world debut will take place next month at 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
The previous teaser video showed a prototype version tearing up the racetrack. No details were revealed but with a little luck we will see the S209 arrive with a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-4 from the WRX STI spec Japan to help distinguish it from last year's Type RA, which featured a North American 2.5-liter spec factory.
The special edition S20 WRX STI model was launched in Japan this decade. In 2011, Subaru produced the WRX STI S206; in 2015, the S207 bowed; and last year, Subaru released the S208. Each model is limited to only a few hundred cars. S209 will be a natural advance after last year's S208, which boasts 324 horsepower. For comparison, Type RA offers 310 hp.
If S209 is similar to S208, we should expect a lot of improvements in the name of performance. Last year's Model S208 featured retuned steering racks, adjustable Bilstein dampers, 19-inch BBS wheels, carbon fiber roofs and several other carbon fiber components. The big wing behind completes the change.
The video above hardly shows what we can expect from S209 because this car is covered with a camouflage wrap, but it plays the racer's charm. We can easily see the rear wing and large front dive aircraft on the car in the video. The wings fall in line with the style of the S208, and diving planes can be a little extra aerodynamic hoax in the style of a racing car.
As for the future of the WRX line, the last thing we heard is that the next generation model will arrive around 2020. Subaru is expected to position it as a standalone model line that is no longer associated with the humble Impreza. Hybrid technology is also expected to play a role.
