Pokemon companies start hard in 2019, because they plan to release trailers for new Pokemon films on New Year's Day.
Earlier today, the Pokemon Company confirmed that the first trailer was for Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution will be released on January 1. This new film shows the return of Mewtwo, the strong Legendary Pokemon faced by the coach at the end Red and Blue Pokemon.
While the details about this film are rare, it is thought that a new film will be set in continuity set in Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You, which acts as a "reboot" of the Pokemon franchise and separates the main films and anime series into a different universe. While anime and film series feature Ash Ketchum and his partner Pikachu, the films focus a little more on the plot and relationship between Ash and Pikachu, with other supporting characters from the television series that do not appear.
Even though it's not expected to be a remake of the original Mewtwo Strikes Back films, most fans believe that the new film will at least borrow some basic themes from the original film and pay homage to the film in a different way. A teaser for the film shows Mewtwo floating in a kind of bubbling liquid, a clear callback to Mewtwo's origin as a cloned Pokemon that grows in a barrel. Many believe that this film will also feature a new form of Mewtwo, given the presence of some Pokemon "mystery" merchandise that will be released around the time of the film. The name of the film, Mewtwo Hit Back in Evolution, it's even tempting that Mewtwo can get a new evolution, even though that doesn't seem possible given the already strong in-game statistics and two Mega Evolutions.
Pokemon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back will be released in July 2019 in Japan.
