Sony has announced a partnership with Microsoft – which has sent Sony shares soaring by 10 percent. This collaboration means that the game giant will use Azure Microsoft cloud services to stream games and media.
Although competitors, Sony and Microsoft came together for strategic partnerships. Sony plans to move streaming games and media to the Azure cloud service – confirming that the next gaming wave will combine cloud technology. According to analysts, the partnership might lead to a further wave of disruption.
The agreement is still in its early stages, so the details will come.
Although the announcement is likely not to have a lot of impact in the short term, the long-term outlook seems promising. Sony and Microsoft's digital infrastructure will from time to time be linked, with the aim of providing high-end video games to consumers without the need to buy expensive consoles or hardware.
After hearing the news, Sony's shares surged around 9.89 percent to levels not seen since December 2018.
The announcement follows another one made by the company yesterday which said that the company would buy back up to 4.8 percent of the total issued shares (around $ 1.82 billion).
Microsoft and Sony's Strategic Partnership
The strategic partnership between Sony and Microsoft will undoubtedly have a significant impact on their investment in emerging technologies.
Microsoft Azure has offered a strong focus on blockchain-based innovation. Businesses can already create ledgers that are distributed through Azure cloud services. Microsoft Azure may be looking to fully decentralize in the not too distant future because they have provided tools for companies to develop, test and use this system internally.
Because Sony works closely with Microsoft Azure, the last interest in the blockchain is noteworthy. It seems unavoidable that this technological insight will be shared. This will also go hand in hand with Sony's own aspirations with the emerging technology, because the company seeks to implement a Digital Rights Management system on the blockchain.
