People living in an escape garage from a fire in northeast Edmonton

No one was injured after a fire broke out in the Sunday morning garage in the Alberta Avenue neighborhood of Edmonton.

Maya Filipovic, communications advisor for the Edmonton Fire Service, said the crew was called to a house on 114th Avenue and 94th Street around 8:40 a.m. Sunday morning and found people had lived in a separate garage that was burning.

Some people were evacuated when the crew arrived, he said, but he did not know how many people actually lived in the garage.

The investigator has not yet determined what caused the fire.

Filipovic said the roof of the garage collapsed in part during a fire.

The crew also evacuated people from home on both sides of the garage because of windy conditions and fears the fires would spread, Filipovic said.

The crew controls the fire in about an hour and is completely extinguished at 10:45.
