Microsoft has launched a series of new icons that Office applications will use. Office 365 customers will see their applications switch to new icons over the next few months, because Microsoft continues to refresh the look and feel of its core productivity package.
The last time the Microsoft Office application got a new icon was 2013, with the same set of icons used by Office 2016 and Office 2013 that were continuously licensed. Since then, Office has more mobile phones with applications for iOS and Android, has a greater Web presence, it adds many collaboration features, and has seen many users switch from continuous licenses to constantly updated Office 365.
New icons are intended to reflect this change. The letters that adorn each icon have reduced in size, with the remaining space used to show a very stylish representation of the application. The color is a little brighter too. Strangely, there have been several inconsistencies in design; OneDrive doesn't have letters at all (it's just a cloud), and Skype uses old proportions, with letters that are much larger than others.
Overall I think they look pretty good, but unfortunately, they failed to fix a big mistake made in 2013. The Outlook icon remains blue stubborn, when all old Outlook users know it must be orange-gold. I am forever losing Outlook among a sea of blue icons – Word, Edge, OneDrive, Tim, Yammer, and Skype – and long to return to the golden age. Unfortunately, Microsoft has ignored my request.
