"We want it to be really small and simple and not what you expect from Mika and Joe," Brzezinski, 51, told the public. "Everything we do is exposed, and everything feels open at every step, so we want it to be private until it's over. We want to recognize it more calmly and have the people who are most important to us around us. And you know, our program is a cocktail party every morning. "
The couple was very interested in maintaining the details of the ceremony. According to Vanity Fair, Scarborough, 55, and Brzezinski "did not send official invitations; they do about 14 phone calls to their family members and close friends, and no guests know where to eat dinner until Saturday night. "
For the ceremony, Brzezinski, who wore a white Milly dress, dressed in tea with polka-dot sleeves, made by designer Michelle Smith, while Scarborough chose a black suit and traditional black tie.
When the string quartet plays Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba," each pair enters from a separate rotunda end to meet in the center of the main room as they are surrounded by inlays that read "history," "justice," and the Ten Commandments, Vanity Fair reported.
"We did the program there more than a year ago and we were just fascinated, seeing all these documents and how we felt seeing them," Brzezinski told the magazine. "This makes sense now more than ever before, remembering what we stand for as partners, what we do to make a living, and what we worry about as a country."
The ceremony was inaugurated by the Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings from Maryland.
After Brzezinski, a mother of two, separated from her 22-year-old husband in 2016, rumors that the TV news duo were dating began circulating. (Scarborough, who has three children himself, divorced his second wife in 2013.)
About a decade after they began holding a morning event together, Brzezinski and Scarborough got engaged in May 2017.
A source told Page Six that Scarborough proposed during the couple's vacation to France and Monaco to celebrate Brzezinski's 50th birthday.
"Joe knelt down and put forward an ancient style with a ring. Of course, Mika is accepted. "They returned from a trip at Cloud Nine," said the insider at the outlet. "There is no such wedding plan yet, they just tell their family the good news."
