Canadian Food Guide Receives First Major Renewal in 12 Years

The Canadian Food Guide got a big change today for the first time in 12 years.

This is a big change from the old "rainbow food" design that hangs in the classroom for years.

Dairy products have been reduced and are now combined with other proteins and fruit juice is no longer a food guide.

Sylvain Charlebois, a professor in food distribution and policy at Dalhousie University, said the main focus was on vegetable sources.

According to Health Canada, we are encouraged to adopt a plant-based diet. Which means more fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Less milk, less meat, less animal products in general. Dairy and meat products will not have their own food groups, even all food groups are out now.

In the food group place are 24 categories of looking at nutrition.

The new food guide also includes advice on how to eat – not just what to eat.

This shows to be 'aware' & # 39; from your eating habits, cooking more often, sharing food with other people and making water your preferred drink.

This new food guide illustration also shows that people limit foods high in sodium, sugar, and saturated fat – offering examples of fast food, frozen appetizers, muffins and sweet drinks.

Part of this new guide was released today at an event in Montreal with Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor. The rest will be announced this year.
