2018 has been a big year for the technology industry.
Many things have happened throughout the year, with the big CES 2018 kickoff in January, followed by MWC in February, the huge controversy of Facebook / Cambridge Analytica and Microsoft re-org in March, iTunes coming to the Microsoft Store and the release of Windows 10 April 2018 Update in April, Microsoft Build 2018 and the Google I / O conference in May, soon followed by the WWDC Apple conference and E3 2018 in June, the launch of Apple's new MacBook Pro line in July, the release of Android Pie and a group of leaked iPhones and Pixels in August, a big month for Apple with a new iPhone, and OS updates in September, a big month for technology with new Google hardware, Microsoft hardware, OnePlus 6T, and a new Windows 10 update in October, rebirth of the MacBook Air and The new iPad Pro in November, and a group of Xbox leaks ended the year in December.
Yep, all of that happened in the last 12 months.
2018 has been a big year for our site too. Our coverage is far broader than before, investigating new fields that we have not discussed in the past. We deliver exclusive, unprecedented news when publishing more than 2,250 stories in just the past 12 months, with almost 320 premium news for our Thurrott Premium readers.
And despite all of these major events throughout the year, some of the best Thurrott.com stories of the year are far different than you expected. Let's look at the top 10 stories, based on page views:
This story is also one of the most recent stories published to enter the top 10 list, which was published in December. This story details how Apple executives triggered a "fire training" situation, especially in the marketing department, after the sale of the latest iPhone did not go as expected by the company.
This is one of the first exclusive stories that we published this year, in February. The story was quite surprising for some people, especially because after all the hype around Windows 10 S, Microsoft turned it into "mode" in Windows was a little surprising to some people.
This is the first time we have revealed the timeline for Microsoft's next major Xbox flagship, Scarlett, back in June. It came out in 2020, and the Xbox community has been very, very excited.
Apple has faced many hardware quality allegations throughout the year, since it redesigned the MacBook Pro. The company confirmed several issues on the iPhone X and MacBook Pro 2017, and the controversy surrounding all Apple product quality issues might help this story rise to the charts.
This is the most recently published story on our site to get into the top 10 list – it was published on the same day as the Apple fire story (# 10). Paul basically wrote a story that told readers about the fact that Microsoft made an official ISO for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 is available once again, and SEO did the rest.
Again, Xbox. This story was published in July right after the big keynote of Microsoft E3, detailing some more details about Microsoft Scarlett's game streaming service for the latest generation Xbox console.
This is probably the most interesting story to get into the top 10 list, published in April. The title here might work, because there are many sensations around Microsoft that embraced Linux in the past year. This story mainly talks about the new Microsoft Azure Sphere OS for Linux-based IoT devices, which are expected to help IoT makers to easily integrate Azure services into their small gadgets or computers.
In April, Brad discussed several Microsoft plans for the future of Xbox. Reports show the company is working on game streaming services, and we have a rough idea of the timeline for the next Microsoft Microsoft Xbox device in April. That's all before we find out more about Microsoft's plans at the end of the year, of course.
This is an interesting story, published in mid-February, which details the limitations of Microsoft Windows 10 on the ARM platform for the first time. Windows 10 on ARM has come a long way since then, in terms of hardware and a little on the software side, but the platform itself was a big point of discussion earlier in the year after the announcement of a large Qualcomm Always Connected PC at the end of 2017.
The Xbox is a big spotlight for sites in terms of spoons this year, with Brad publishing a number of spoons on the next generation Xbox console. Microsoft building the Xbox without disk is one of the biggest stories, taking first place for the top 10 stories this year, although only published in mid-November. Diskless Xbox One is a big problem for many reasons, and it's not surprising to see the Xbox community so excited about the new Xbox console that came out before the big release of Scarlett in 2020.
That's it – these are the top 10 stories that we published in the last 12 months. 2019 will only have a bigger story, starting with CES 2019.
