DRC: cholera epidemic in Lubumbashi and the region – Afrique Media


Cholera killed around sixty people in Hulu's Katanga province including dozens in Lubumbashi, the economic and mining capital, provincial Health Minister Modeste Balloy said on Friday.

The epidemic began in August according to him.

"The epidemiological curve shows since August 24, 2018 (…) a total of 1,304 registered patients and 64 deaths, including 42 intra-hospitals and 22 communities," he said, quoted by UN Okapi radio.

This epidemic outbreak is in the eastern city of Lubumbashi, in an environment lacking drinking water where people consume water from stool-containing rivers, the official told a correspondent. from AFP.

Cholera is endemic in the DRC.

In November 2018, the World Health Organization reported that "a total of 25,170 cases of cholera including 857 deaths (3.4%)" have been reported since the beginning of the year in the DRC.

At least one case of cholera has been reported in 21 of the 26 provinces in the country.

In 2017, cholera killed 1,190 people in the DRC because of 55,000 cases.
