What health effects does formaldehyde have?
Since June 2014, formaldehyde has been used as a carcinogenic substance (category 1 B). As reported by the Federal Environmental Agency, it is often used as an adhesive component in wood-based materials. Formaldehyde can be released into the air and inhaled. Higher formaldehyde concentrations can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes. In the worst case, a carcinogenic process is triggered. In addition, formaldehyde is thought to trigger or increase asthma. The Federal Environment Agency recommends that the concentration of formaldehyde in room air be as low as possible. (Vb)
