Ferrari have signed driver Mick Schumacher for his junior academy. Formula 1 record champion son Michael Schumacher has signed a contract and will participate in a testing program before the new motorsport season, Ferrari said.
19-year-old Mick Schumacher has won the Formula 3 European Championship at the preseason. This year he went up to Formula 2 and continued there for the Prema racing team. Michael Schumacher has won between 2000 and 2004 five of seven titles in the Ferrari cockpit and is still considered in Italy as a Scuderia icon.
"I am very happy Ferrari have partnered with me and my future in motorsport as part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and also the Scuderia Ferrari family will be red," Mick Schumacher said of his management. He wants to realize his dream as a promotion to Formula 1. "It's clear that since my birth, Ferrari has a great place in my heart and in the heart of our family, so I look forward to this step at a personal level," said Schumacher.
The new Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto acknowledged the "special emotional interest" of the staff, "but we have chosen Mick for his talent and human and professional qualities."
The last and only Ferrari World Champion after the Schumacher era was Finn Kimi Raikkonen in 2007.
