This year seems to be the return of the classic video game, with the release of the Resident Evil 2 remake, WoW Classic and, soon, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Activision and developer Infinity Ward brought back the revolutionary military FPS game, giving him new paints and new toys for players.
Modern Warfare is a reimagined from the 2007 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was originally released for PS3, PC and Xbox 360, but with a few updates. Multiplayer will feature several new modes, including one that allows teams of two to compete with each other on a small map and another that allows more than 100 players to take part in an all-out war.
On Thursday, Infinity Ward revealed his plans to sell the Modern Warfare Battle Pass instead of loot boxes after the game was launched.
"The new Battle Pass system will allow players to see the content they produce or buy," the developer said. "Battle Passes will launch time into a new live season, post-launch, so you can open new content with the theme Modern Warfare that matches every season."
As in other games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends, players pay Battle Pass to unlock additional cosmetics in the game such as clothing, weapon skin, and so on. Infinity Ward says there will be free content available to players too, and unlocked cosmetics won't disturb the balance of the game by giving players an advantage. There is no price listed in the Battle Pass announcement.
What is the release date for Modern Warfare?
Modern Warfare comes out on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One and PC with a Battle.net account. Before being released, there will be several beta, depending on what platform you want.
The first PS4 beta runs September 12-16 for those who booked the previous match. The second beta weekend for all three platforms takes place September 19-23. Early access to cross platform beta begins September 19 for anyone who orders on PS4, PC or Xbox One, with an open beta that runs September 21-23.
Infinity Ward released the PC requirements for the Modern Warfare beta in mid-September. One important requirement is a graphics card that is compatible with DirectX 12. These are the rest that are needed to run the game:
- OS: Windows 7 64-Bit (SP1) or Windows 10 64-Bit (1709 or newer).
- CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k or equivalent AMD.
- Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 2GB / GTX 1650 4GB or AMD Radeon HD 7950.
- RAM: 8GB RAM.
- HDD: 45GB HD space.
And here are the recommended specifications for beta:
- OS: Windows 10 64 Bit (latest service pack).
- CPU: Intel Core i7 4770k or equivalent to AMD.
- Video: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB / GTX 1660 6GB or AMD Radeon R9 390 / AMD RX 580.
- RAM: 16GB RAM.
- HDD: 45GB HD space.
Call of Duty fans in Russia, however, will have difficulty getting the game. Tweets from Russia's Call of Duty account said Tuesday the game would not be available digitally on PlayStation 4.
"SIE has decided not to sell the game in the Russian PS Store," said the translated tweet. "We look forward to the release of the game digitally for PC and Xbox on October 25."
It seems that this only affects the digital version of the game that will be available on Russia's PlayStation Store. The physical version of the game must still be purchased.
Those who order the game can buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition for $ 200, which will include a pair of functioning night vision goggles.
Retelling of modern
Infinity Ward will officially reveal the details of the Modern Warfare campaign in late September. The first trailer shows footage that will be familiar to fans of the series, including the appearance of SAS Captain John Price, who is a central character in the game Modern Warfare.
The official description for the game said: "Players will engage in amazing covert operations with various international special forces players throughout iconic European cities and unstable stretches in the Middle East."
In the original CoD 4, the coup leader in the Middle East was secretly supported by Russian ultranationalists who wanted to return the country to the Cold War era. The player controls an American and British operation that seeks to stop nuclear destruction in missions set forth throughout the world. Because this is a re-description of the game, Modern Warfare can offer an alternative timeline for events that occur in the original game.
Modern multi-player madness
Multiplayer is the bread and butter of the Call of Duty series. In Modern Warfare, this game will make a few additions, big and small.
On the small side, Infinity Ward developed a new 2vs2 multiplayer called Gunfight. The duos will face off in a small arena and everyone will have the same main weapons, pistols, deadly grenades and tactical grenades. Player equipment will change every two rounds and the first team to win six rounds wins the match. The match can last several minutes to several seconds depending on the team.
Modern Warfare will then become big with Ground War, a mode that supports more than 100 players. Initial impressions indicate the player will have a large map to play with vehicles to drive and killstreak turns left and right.
There will also be a small traditional team consisting of four against four, six against six and so on.
Modern Warfare players who have already played in beta seem to find options for loot boxes. A Twitter user tweeted September 12 screenshot shows a Loot boxes are listed as "general inventory drop." It is not clear what is in the box.
Beta players also notice that nuclear killstreak is in multiplayer games. This was confirmed by a September 12 tweet from Ashton Williams, senior communications manager for Infinity Ward.
In Call of Duty 2009: Modern Warfare 2, players can cancel a nuclear attack after carrying out 25 consecutive killings. Using nuclear weapons will automatically end the match, and teams with players who use killstreak will win the match.
Infinity Ward will also add a large number of changes to game physics to add another layer of realism. Higher caliber weapons will penetrate the structure better than other weapons, weapons can be mounted on the surface to help reduce retreat and doors can now be broken with grenades. There will also be new finishing steps available for players who are approaching to do knife kills and want to show off a little.
Infinity Ward held a live stream on September 17 to talk about the new Land War mode that became available in the upcoming crossplay beta starting September 19. Karst River Quarry is a large map that will have two teams consisting of 32 players who fight each other. One developer said spawn points were important for the development team because on a very large map they didn't want players to have to run long distances after respawning. In a Land War match, players will be able to respawn near teammates, in vehicles driven by teammates or at critical points on the map where all other teammates should be.
Players who participate in weekend beta and reach level 10 will receive a 725-shotgun blueprint. Blueprints can be customized in various ways such as changing the barrel or color by the players when they go to the gunman.
This beta will also be the first time the Call of Duty game has played across platforms. Players must create a CoD account and make a display name that will appear on all platforms. People can form parties with friends on any platform and can talk to each other through in-game voice chat. Each player will have an icon that indicates if they are playing on PS4, Xbox One or PC.
Because this is a cross platform game, Infinity Ward also applies parameters in its matchmaking system to place players with a mouse and keyboard with others using the same thing. This means that those who have controllers also tend to play against each other. In FPS games, mouse-and-keyboard is considered a superior control option compared to traditional gamepad, so keeping players separate will help reduce frustration. However, there may be instances where two control schemes will play in the same match, for example, if there are a limited number of players at the time or if the skill levels of players are equal to each other.
Infinity Ward also confirmed that most post-launch content will appear on all three platforms simultaneously. In previous years, one console would receive content days if not weeks before another depending on what partnership existed with publisher Activision.
Players in the crossplay beta notice that there is cross-progression, which means that a player on one platform can start playing on another platform and continue their statistics. Infinity Ward hasn't confirmed this feature for games.
A clip appeared on Reddit on September 23 featuring the full Modern Warfare campaign video. In the trailer, Captain John Price is seen talking about tracking down terrorists behind several attacks. There are also several scenes with John "Soap" MacTavish, which is a character that players use during the game.
The trailer did make its official debut during the Sony State of Play event on September 24.
On the PlayStation YouTube channel, the same trailer is available to watch, but ends with a message that says "Special Survival Mode. Play first on PS4." According to the fine print on the trailer, this is exclusively timed to 1 October 2020.
Spec Ops is a cooperative multiplayer for Modern Warfare, and Survival Mode is where players join to fend off wave after wave of enemies. Fans of the series immediately took to social media to denounce the exclusivity of fashion. A Reddit user posted a thread in the Modern Warfare subreddit on September 23 about canceling their preorder for the game. Others also said they would do the same thing. PS4 owners also expressed solidarity with Xbox One owners for this step by Infinity Ward and Activision.
Taylor Kurosaki, narrative studio director at Infinity Ward, took to Twitter on September 24 to clear up the confusion about fashion exclusivity. He said Survival Mode was only "sliver" of all Spec Ops and that all players would receive the same content after the game's launch.
Another user answered Kurosaki by saying that they were disappointed with the decision and one stated he would cancel the pre-order.
Another controversy grew following the trailer that was revealed during Sony's State of Play. YouTuber Revolution Game tweeted that cosmetics in the game, weapons, and other content will only be available in drops of inventory, which is a booty box for the game.
According to him, the tweets were copied and pasted from sources with knowledge of upcoming micro transactions.
Joel Emslie, studio art director for Infinity Ward, responded to Reddit's recent anger on September 26. In a thread, he wants to let the Modern Warfare community know that the studio is listening to his concerns about micro transactions and the exclusive Survival of PS4 Mode. He also hopes that people who are angry at the studio will also calm down on the developer.
"Get out of your system but remember there is a human team here at IW and we have bad days just like you," he said. "Our interest is entirely in the game itself. My request to you all is to focus on the factual information and not be discarded by uninformed people who want to make a name for themselves by spreading half baked inflammatory rumors."
On October 8, Infinity Ward revealed the Ops Spec Operation mode for all platforms. Four players joined the campaign in several areas with the aim of infiltrating and stopping Al-Qatala's plans.
Mission is another co-op mode available that allows players to replay parts of a campaign and judge players based on their performance.
Concerns about the possibility of micro transactions continue to develop in the Modern Warfare community. Joel Emslie, studio art director for Infinity Ward, took to Reddit on October 14 to discuss the concerns experienced by some players.
"There continues to be wrong information and misinformation being pushed about Modern Warfare," he said. "What I can say at this time is that we certainly DO NOT work on any drop supply system or loot box. Also, functional matters are opened through GAMEPLAY."
It was first published on September 9 and was updated when new information was disclosed.
