Sydney:

An Australian woman accused of murder has been sent for a medical examination amid reports that she beheaded her mother and left her head outside a neighbor's house.

Police said the body of a 57-year-old woman was found inside her Sydney home on Saturday night, in what they called one of the "most horrible" events they had ever witnessed.

The 25-year-old girl's daughter was arrested in the front park of a neighbor's house after allegedly placing her mother's head on an outside trail, reports the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

ABC national broadcaster said the woman accused of appearing at Parramatta Bail Court via a video link on Sunday told the court that she needed medical attention.

The woman was sent to the hospital for medical assessment, police were confirmed to AFP.

He did not apply for a guarantee, ABC added.

Officers said a four-year-old relative witnessed the incident, and was hospitalized with a minor head injury before being returned to his family.

Detective superintendent Brett McFadden said officers who attended the crime scene had been offered professional support.

"While the police are trained to respond to all types of situations, there is no way out of this fact is a terrible attack," he told reporters in Sydney.

"This is there with one of the most significant, most horrible scenes that the police have to face."
