INÉS PÁEZ DE LA TORRE
If certain social taboos persist about menopause that prevents us from accepting it with total naturalness, as a series of expected and evolutionary changes … with andropause – the analogous process in the masculine version – stigma and rejection are even more marked. (Maybe this happens because, unlike us, sperm production is not disturbed, so fertility continues).
Andropause begins to manifest itself at varying ages – about 45 years onwards – when the testicles begin to produce lower testosterone levels. Like menopause, it is part of the normal aging process.
These hormonal changes trigger a decrease in certain physiological functions that lead to the appearance of several symptoms. Especially physical, but also with psychological correlation: lack of muscle mass, weight, hair loss, "hot flashes" similar to menopausal women, urinary problems, fatigue, insomnia, irritability, mood swings, among others. However, not all men will experience a complete list. And more than one will not be affected.
But sometimes it is necessary to consult with a special professional – an andrologist – to evaluate the possibility of taking hormone replacement treatments (taking into account the severity of the symptoms, testosterone levels, the implanted risk according to the patient's clinical condition, etc.).
Perhaps the greatest male concern about lower hormone production is focused on the possible effects on sexual function: desires decrease – don't forget that testosterone is considered a "desire hormone" – erectile difficulties, a longer refractory period (this is: physiological time needed to can respond to new sexual stimuli after ejaculation), reduction or absence of morning erections, lower ejaculatory volume, less intense orgasms. Again: these effects do not occur together or in all men. (And small blue pills, as is well known, have changed the landscape regarding erectile problems).
On the other hand, the influence of a person's general health condition, previous habits, sexual patterns and even attitudes towards life. In this sense, we all know men and women who tend to identify too quickly with "pain and pain" (in any form, not only sexually). As if, even though it's hard to believe, they will find a kind of comfort zone to be "old", or at least understanding in the environment, comfort.
Fortunately, there are also many others who, on the other hand, cultivate a spirit that is able to demonstrate and take with humor the inevitable problems that come with age. Something that, without doubt, makes them somehow always young, regardless of their age.
