Take control of your health today at Bryanston Organic Market

Every three seconds a person dies of causes related to hypertension, and it is estimated that between 44 and 46 percent of South Africans over the age of 15 have high blood pressure.

Surprisingly though this percentage might, even worse, is that only about 50 percent of those affected by high blood pressure realize it.

This May, make your health a priority and check your blood pressure for free thanks to the collaborative campaign, Measurement Month in May, which is governed by the International Hypertension Society (ISH), South African Hypertension Society, Servier, National Department of Health, Dis-Chem, Novartis, Omron and MSD.

ISH President, professor Alta Schutte said, "In South Africa almost one out of every two adults suffers from hypertension. Even more worrying is that about 70 percent of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa with hypertension are not aware that they have high blood pressure. "

Schutte is also the director of the South African Council's Medical Research Unit for Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease at North-West University.

A simple blood pressure test that measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart is pumping, can tell you if you have reason to worry.

"Over the past two years, Measurement Month in May has been the largest screening campaign ever synchronized in the world of all risk factors, testing more than 2.7 million people. "This highlights the importance of increasing blood pressure as a major risk factor for death in the world. In 2019, we hope to reach a much greater number, "Schutte said.

"All information collected from national screenings is included in the national database. We will use the data collected to assess and learn more about the problem of high blood pressure. All data that we collect is completely anonymous.

"The next important step is to use these results to ensure changes in global and local policies, where governments are activated to take these risk factors seriously and ensure that blood pressure management is well controlled and systematic."
